Dom Beckett
Title of body of work: The King is gone but he's not forgotten.
Artist statement:
Music is a beautiful part of human life. The guitar is a highly versatile instrument that has become an icon of popular culture the world over. Many, inspired by their idols and their dreams, are drawn to learn it at an early age. But guitars - like electric train sets and surfboards (and cameras?) - also hold fascination for their fervent devotees long after youth and all prospect of fame and glory have passed. Perhaps it's true that there is a guitar obsessed type. Guitar bores? But it is also true that you will find these people (mostly men) in many walks of life. With this body of work I set out to track down and present the viewer with a small sample of these people in their environments. Neil Young famously and ironically sang "It's better to burn out than it is to rust". My hope is that the viewer will be left with a sense that rusting is not so bad when you know what you love.
Artist bio
Dom Beckett is a Sydney based photographer with broad interests, but with a particular leaning in his work towards portraiture and documentary style work. His interest in the possibilities of photography began when he was still a child and came across a book of the MOMA's iconic 1955 Family of Man exhibition. This featured many of the great photographers of that time and sought to present universal themes of human life. as an adult, his love of photography has been nurtured by courses at the late Australian Centre for Photography and most recently the completion of this TAFE diploma. He loves that a well crafted photo can communicate something that no other medium can. He also loves that a photograph can pack a visual and emotional punch, but at the same time may not need to be taken too seriously - after all, everyone can take a photo, right? As well as being a practicing photographer, Dom also maintains a small consultancy business, has a family and an ill-behaved dog, and enjoys enthusiastically making bad music.
